The material presented on this web page was collected August 2005 in Hornsund, Svalbard. This web site contributes to and was supported by the Arctic Ocean Diversity Census of Marine Life Project.


All information about seaweeds was taken from "Atlas of the Marine Flora of Southern Spitsbergen", IOPAS,1990.
The collection was updated with species fund by Florczyk and Latała between 1981- 83 in Hornsund.

Hornsund
The large fjord on Svalbard (or a diferent name Spitsbergen) is situated within South Spitsbergen National Park, containing Wedel Jarlsbergland, Torellland and Sorkappland with adjacent waters.
The unique and pristine richness of the marine fauna and flora in Hornsund, was a reason to be nominated as one of the 12 European Biodiversity Flagship Sites by the 5th Framework Programme of the European Community.

Macroalgae
A classification of algae that are defined according to the size of the plant where the body of the plant is large enough to be observable to the eye.
Common name for marine macroalgae: seaweeds. They are saltwater-dwelling, simple organisms. General category: "plants". Most of them are the green (1200 species), brown (2000 species) or red (6000 species).
Macroalgae are found throughout the world's oceans and seas.
