IO PAN -Instytut Oceanologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk, an independent research institute established in 1977, is one of the largest Polish institutions involved in marine research. The Institute’s mission is to generate knowledge to support sustainable use of the marine environment through innovative and high level scientific research. IOPAS is divided into five departments, which are subdivided into 16 specialized laboratories. Most of research is focused on the European seas: Baltic, North Atlantic and the European Arctic region. IO PAN employs 180 people, runs postgraduate studies for 35 PhD students. In the last two decades, IO PAN has lead a multitude of projects funded by national and international financing programs. The Institute belongs to three European Networks of Excellence: in marine biodiversity (MARBEF), marine genomics (MARINEGENOMICS), and ocean research (EUROCEANS). Since 2002 IO PAN holds the EU Status of Center of Excellence in Shelf Sea Studies. IO PAN is a member of international organizations (e.g. Marine Board, EuroGOOS), and actively participates in educational activities (e.g., LITUS, WebLab projects). Since 2009 it has been developing an Integrated Ocean Data Information System. The Institute operates its own research vessel, r/v Oceania that has undertaken research cruises to Arctic waters each summer for the last 20 years and publishes ‘Oceanologia’, a peer-reviewed journal of basic research in marine science with a world-wide distribution (IF 2011: 1.242).
