IO PAN Events
- 8th June. Today we celebrate the World Oceans Day. We are happy to inform that as of 4 June 2020 IO PAN has become a founding member of the EU4Ocean Platform The official launch of the EU4Ocean Platform will be in September 2020, with a series of webinars 24-25 September 2020.
- 6th March, Gdańsk, National Maritime Museum. One of the speakers was Violetta Drozdowska, who appeared in absolutely good company: Captain Joanna Pajkowska, who in 2019 ended her lonely cruise around the Earth in 216 days, and Agata Bogusz - gold medalist in freediving, psychologist and personal trainer. The seminar was devoted to the role of women in the broadly understood maritime industry and allowed to take a really deep breath, think about how to reconcile motherhood with scientific work and learn the taste of loneliness on the high seas. The event was advertised under the motto: "Queen of the Seas for Women's Day. With such girls don't be afraid to go on the farthest cruise!"-na-dzien-kobiet-w-okm-ii-edycja-seminarium-dziewczyny-na-fali" Maritime Culture Centre.
- 13th January 2020, Gdańsk. Greta Thunberg took part in Gdańsk in shooting a BBC documentary on the effect of climate change. She shot some scenes with Jacek Piskozub from IO PAN, supported on the filmset by Violetta Drozdowska.

Ewa Korejwo will spend over 6 weeks in the Arctic during MOSAiC School 2019. MOSAiC is an expedition organized in cooperation with many research institutes in the polar regions, under the leadership of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany. The German icebreakern RV Polarstern will drift along with sea ice throughout the year. Over 300 scientists will study Arctic climate processes that combine atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, biogeochemistry and the ecosystem. The results obtained during the MOSAiC project will allow a better understanding of the regional and global consequences of climate change in the Arctic and sea ice loss.
- 19th September 2019. Space Sciences Committee Polish Academy of Sciences / Gdańsk Branch in cooperation with Baltic Sea & Space Cluster invites for joint conference "Remote-sensing. Challenges in gather and sharing data".
- 17th-19th September 2019. Representatives of the most important research centers from the Baltic Sea region met at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and initiate the next edition of the DAIMON project: Decision Aid for Dumped Munitions. So far an interdisciplinary team of experts from Poland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Russia has been able to determine the location of weapons lying on the bottom of the Baltic and the Skagerrak with a high accuracy and to develop methods and tools which are able to better estimate the risk of this hazardous waste to the environment and people. The task of the DAIMON 2 project is to apply these methods in practice using artificial intelligence software to support maritime administration, the navy and offshore companies in decision-making processes regarding operations in areas contaminated with sunken weapons. In the following years, the project will train employees of the institutions concerned. An estimated half a million tons of conventional and chemical ammunition lying on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, which was not used in the conflicts of I and II World War and sunk, mainly at three "underwater dumps" in the Gdansk, Bornholm and Gotland Deeps, but also in many other regions. Seabed installations and trawler nets are at the greatest risk of contact with weapons and thus the release of toxic substances into the marine environment.

On 21th of August 2019, scientists from the Institute of Oceanology PAS for the first time in the institute’s history carried out ocean observations at the North Pole. In the frame of international projects CAATEX ad EU INTAROS, two physical oceanographers from the IO PAN Observational Oceanography Lab., Agnieszka Beszczyńska-Möller and Piotr Wieczorek, participate in the scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean. Scientists from Norway, Poland, US and Canada take part and work together on board of the Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker KV Svalbard during the expedition coordinated by the Nansen Center from Bergen (NERSC). The main goal of the one-month-long cruise is deployment of deep moorings in the central Arctic Ocean for year-round observations of ocean environment. IO PAN scientists are responsible for one of four moorings, equipped with the autonomous instruments for acoustic observations (acoustic tomography), and physical (ocean temperature, salinity, and currents, sea ice drift and draft) and biogeochemical (oceanic dissolved oxygen, pCO2 and pH) measurements in the arctic waters. Additional observations are collected during the cruise from the stations located on drifting ice floes for studying ocean processes under the multiyear sea ice cover. During ice stations the IO PAN team collects microstructure measurements in the upper oceanic layer that plays a key role in the heat exchange between ocean, atmosphere and sea ice. The research expedition will end in the mid-September and collected data will contribute to extend our knowledge about the role played by the high-latitude ocean in the observed climate change that is particularly pronounced in the Arctic regions.

- January 2015. Good news for the Baltic Sea! Significant increase of the deep water salinity has been recently observed by our oceanographers from the Physical Oceanography Department IO PAN. It is because of the very rare but important phenomenon, namely the intense water inflow from the North Sea. The last big inflows to the Baltic Sea were noted in 1993 and 2003. This present observed saltwater intrusion seemed to be even greater than the previous ones.
For more information - see news on the Observational Oceanography Laboratory webpage.
