Activities

The project includes seven thematic Work Packages (WP1-WP7):

Work Package 1: Project management and dissemination
Task 1.1. Project management

Work Package 2: Open ocean oceanography
Task 2.1. To analyze historical data from available archives and to collect dedicated new data to describe and understand the variability of AW properties in the WSC on different time scales
Task 2.2. To investigate the local and remote forcing mechanisms responsible for interannual variability of the AW in the West Spitsbergen Current using the available hydrographic and atmospheric data, reanalysis and results of numerical model
Task 2.3. To investigate topographically guided mechanisms of the AW circulation onto the West Spitsbergen shelf. To develop the analytical model and use existing numerical model to study the shelf circulation

Work Package 3: Fjord oceanography
Task 3.1. Fjord hydrography from historical and new data
Task 3.2. Freshwater content and distribution from historical and new data
Task 3.3. Arctic fjord circulation processes, observations and modelling

Work Package 4: Sea Ice
Task 4.1. Compilation of satellite data from the Svalbard area
Task 4.2. To analyse the sea ice data for specific fjords and shelf areas
Task 4.3. Air-ice-sea interactions study based on fjord-polynya model
Task 4.4. To analyse the response of the sea ice cover to atmospheric and ocean forcing

Work Package 5: Freshwater from the land
Task 5.1. Detailed mapping and evaluation of features of the current state and main features of glaciated and unglaciated catchments within the Hornsund hydro-glaciological basin
Task 5.2. Studies of factors and regimes of outflow from specific terrestrial sources i.e. partly glaciated and unglaciated catchments
Task 5.3. Building of conceptual and semi-quantitative model of water drainage system and discharge from tidewater glaciers emptying into Hornsund fiord
Task 5.4. Identification of key factors of the tidewater glacier’s dynamics and calving intensity to the fiord
Task 5.5. Elaboration of the total water budget of the Hornsund hydro-glaciological basin including surface mass balance and icebergs production by tidewater glaciers

Work Package 6: Atmosphere and climate change
Task 6.1. To study climate changes in the early instrumental period
Task 6.2. To establish a homogenized West Spitsbergen (Hornsund and Isfjord Radio) air temperature time series 1934-present
Task 6.3. To study the north-south air temperature gradient on the Western Svalbard
Task 6.4. Study the recent temperature anomalies on western Spitsbergen and its relation to circulation, sea ice, sea temperatures and ocean heat transport
Task 6.5. To recognize radiation and heat budget changes
Task 6.6. To describe topoclimate data from different Horsund regions based on historical sources and collected data

Work Package 7: Synthesis
Task 7.1. Compile the results of work done in WP2- WP6. Results from the atmospheric, oceanographic, sea ice and land ice studies will be compiled during the third year and the connections between the results will be analyzed
Task 7.2. Organise a workshop with all project partners and external experts where the project results are discussed and conclusions identified
Task 7.3. Prepare report/publication with synthesis of the results
